Garden update

Here is the state of our garden these days. The tomatoes are finishing up, the broccoli is finally coming in and we've gotten a few green peppers. When I was cleaning out the watermelon vines, I noticed a live green vine and some fruit. So, the watermelon is not dead and it goes on, there are 3 melons growing right now. We cleaned out everything else and planted pumpkins and built a trellis for pole beans and cucumbers. I plan on planting some more tomatoes, squash, onions and bush beans once I can find the seeds. The local stores removed the spring displays and aren't getting any new seeds for another month. The spring garden was a great learning experience, how many seeds to plant, what grows well, and how long things take. I was able to preserve alot of cucumbers and tomatoes through canning. I have displayed the cans in the Living Room shelves, not much pantry space available. We are now down one pig. Scatter has left us and will return in a few weeks in a new form. It all went well, we found a butcher in MacClenney and he picked up the hog yesterday and it will take about 2 weeks to process. It's weird writing about this, I know alot of people think we are weird for wanting to raise a pig and butcher it. We just want to taste fresh meat that we raised and know what exactly is in it. The bacon is cured and then smoked in a real smoke house by the butcher. He said the store-bought bacon is not processed in a smoke house and the bacon he makes is totally different. Can't wait to find out the difference! In crafting news, I practiced with my machine some more and embroidered a burp cloth for a baby gift. I like the way it turned out, still trying to figure how to line the fabric up in the hoop properly. I'm also working on a crib bumper, skirt, curtain panels and pillow covers for a custom order. This will be the first time I've made these for a customer, so I'm a little nervous I'm going to mess up, but excited to see the finished product!

German Night

We are part of a Supper Club that meets every 4-6 weeks at a different home each meeting and the themes have included Thai, Italian, Greek, Soul Food and German. We hosted German Night this past Saturday Night and we had a Cheese Dip with crackers, Knockwurst, Brautwurst and Keilbasa with Saur Kraut, German Potato Salad, Cabbage Salad, Pumperknickel Bread and Black Forest Cake and a variety of German Beers and Wines. My Dad's heritage is German, both his parents were from Germany, so I borrowed a few things for the table from them, including some great family pictures from Germany. Jay's Dad collects German Steins which we borrowed and used for drinking beer out of. The night was such fun we want to have an October Fest Celebration next.

Today Sean turns 2! We celebrated last night with some friends/family and good food. The menu included home raised barbeque chicken and store bought pork ribs, but soon that's going to change. Jay spent the good part of the morning preparing the birds while I got the rest of the food ready, like corn bread muffins, coleslaw, sweet tea and chocolate cake with strawberries. The kids had a great time playing and just being kids, they managed to stop for 5 minutes to eat and then it was off to playing again. After we ate, we went swimming next door at the grandparents house and enjoyed cake and ice cream. The kids swam till it was dark and our boys are still sleeping it off this morning. I can't believe my Seanie is already 2, I don't remember much of the past two years, since Ian is only 20 months older, it just seems like a blur. Sean is very special to us and we love his happy personality. He is always ready to give us a hug and a kiss even when we don't ask for one. Lately, he has been into dress up clothes, trying on everything he can manage to wear, like a cowboy hat, a hook and a sword with a santa claus hat underneath. We love you Seanie!

watermelon anyone?

This morning we headed out to the beach for a little fun in the sun. We live about 45 minutes from St. Augustine Beach, which makes our trips to the beach day trips. I haven't taken the boys by myself before, because of the drive and the effort, but what was I waiting for. I remember when my sister would pack up her station wagon with her boys, her two sisters, and everything else baby related she could fit in and head out to the beach. Those were the best days of my summer when I was 8 and I want my boys to experience the beach too! We had a great day playing without any complaining or fighting over toys. It's carefree play at its best. I'm going again next week and maybe the week after that. I think we'll make it part of our weekly routine until it's too cold to go.

summer heat brings sunflowers

A few months ago we planted 3 sunflower seed packets and hand watered our little plants until today they are producing lovely, no beautiful flowers. They are the most gorgeous flowers I've ever seen. Yesterday I had 9 3-4 year olds and their Mom's over for a Van Gogh lesson (homeschool co-op). We learned all about Van Gogh and painted sunflowers, well some of the children attempted to paint them from the still life I had in the center of the table. Ian and a few others just painted all over their papers without even looking at the flowers. That's something we need to work on. Anyway, we learned about pointalism last week and next week we are doing some kind of painting on plaster. I'm very excited about my latest bag. It's a bag for the beach/pool out of oil cloth, inside and out. I got an email last week from someone who found my site through another and they wanted a pool bag. Well, I had this idea and I wanted one too so I made a mock up for myself. It's so much better than my old baby blue bag that was a freebee. Sean has really gotten into dressing up so here he is last week as a police man with a hook!

I would like to introduce a good friend of mine from college, his name is Clay Bolt, isn't that a cool name? We were both in the art department at Anderson College in the great state of South Carolina, where Clay grew up and still lives. I had the privelage to hang out with him and a few other talented and very hilarious people, Kelli, Katie and Kerry in college. I have such great memories of those days and I still keep in touch with most of the group. Clay is now married to a great gal, all the way from Australia. They have a cute little little boy and a baby on the way, yeah! Clay is a talented graphic designer, a nature photographer/writer and an avid bird watcher. Proof that I can sew on my new machine

The bag is just regular old sewing. I had an order to fill and my machine made it a lot easier. The cute aprons gave me some embroidery practice and I used two different decorative stitches as well. Now my boys can be even cuter when they are helping me out in the kitchen, as if that were possible! Check out my flickr photos for a closer view!

Here we are 7 years ago on our wedding day! I love that curl in Jay's hair, he got rid of that soon after we married and went to the short cut, but I do have the picture. Thanks everyone for commenting on our anniversary and on my new machine. Unfortunately Jay got a stomach bug Sunday night and was sick most of Monday and I still have a lingering cold, which I hope to be over very soon! I used my new machine Sunday night to sew a bag and it was a dream. It was so quiet and very fast. I love the automatic thread cutting feature. I'll post pictures of the bag later today if I remember.

the 8 hour round trip was a success. we came home with a new to me sewing/embroidery machine with all the bells and whistles i'll ever need or want. we enjoyed the long country ride and even stopped at uf for a tour of the student gardens. it was interesting to see how differently the vegetables were staked and they even had bannana trees, with bannanas, 15 feet tall. back to the machine, it is a 9 year old machine by babylock, it has lots and lots of stitches, it embroiders, it has a button that you push and it cuts the thread for you, it has a touch screen and it's just really cool. i'm very excited and all my waiting and research paid off because i feel like i got something that is very versitile that can take me to the next level of sewing, but i didn't get ripped off in the process. i'm off to practice with my new machine!

so i'm sitting here waiting for Jay to finish up with a work emergency. yes, there are emergencies in the coffe business. i've been browsing some blogs and then i finally look at my pathetic, neglected blog and think i should post. but what should i post, well i have pictures from 4th of july, no then i'll have to go get the camera out of the kitchen and download the pictures, too much work. so i just started typing and this is what you get. no, that's not all! i'm waiting to drive 2 1/2 hours to crystal springs, fl to look at a used babylock esante sewing/embroidery machine. the store has it listed for a great price, but the downfall is the drive. after calling around town for used machines nothing came up and the stores only had floor models on sale for double the price of the used one. so, we are going to celebrate our anniversay, which is monday, driving to look at a sewing machine. i guess we'll get dinner while we are out! gotta go!

Here is our business flyer for farm fresh eggs. It's going to the printers today and we will be sending out emails, mailings and making calls to all those that have shown interest since we got the new chicks in January. Here we go! **Update: So far we've had 3 sales and others have shown interest in buying our eggs, so we might not have so many around as we thought. We took eggs for our neighbors to try, only 5 neighbors on our street and the boys helped by ringing their doorbells numerous times and knocking on the door. We'll see how it goes, so far friends and neighbors are a good start!

This glamour shot of our watermelon and cantlopue was taken by yours truly. Yes, I know I out did myself. We finally got the courage to cut open one of the 8 watermelons that made it in the garden and boy was it ready. Bright red, juicy watermelon is the perfect treat for a hot summer afternoon. We love the stuff around here! The cantalope was not as good. Not sweet enough for our liking, but it was our first attempt. We keep telling ourselves that. Tonight I looked out the window and saw two little guys running through the yard with green bushes in their arms. I had to grab my camera and get them with their stash of carrots from the garden. Such fun to go out and pick some food from the ground, how cool is that? Very cool according to Ian who can't wait to take a watermelon to his cousins house this weekend. Yep, we are traveling to Tallahassee Saturday to witness a trio baptism, all three boys (8,6, & 4 months) are being baptized this Sunday at their local church. We are looking forward to our visit! Finally, we have approximately 10 dozens eggs in our refrigerator right now, so if you read this blog and are in the area please come get some eggs! We are putting together a flyer and a list of people that have shown interest in farm fresh pastured poultry eggs, I know it's a mouth full, but it's true. Today alone we collected 40 eggs, so the hens are increasing their production and soon we'll have 50 a day at least. We are selling the eggs for $2.50/1 dozen and $3.00/1-1/2 dozen, and let me tell you they are worth it. These hens graze on fresh grass and insects daily due to their mobile homes and enjoy sunlight, fresh water and comfortable nesting boxes with fresh hay for laying the most egg-cellent egg! (I couldn't help myself.)

What a treat! My good friend Marce sent me the coolest book on vintage bags. I love it! It has 20 sewing patterns for vintage bags and purses and lots of tips, like sewing in top zippers, which is something I've wanted to do. Since I've been teaching myself, with and without patterns how to make bags, this book will help me fine tune some things I've been working on. Thanks Marce, the book is perfect and I look forward to trying the patterns out.

No crafting this week, with the duties around the house, the boys need for food almost every half hour, afternoon naps, and then late afternoon nausea there was just no time or the desire for sewing. All the animals are doing well. The ducks are now living and swimming in the pond. There was a scare with a snapping turtle, which was soon taken care of, so the ducks are swimming safely for now. The chickens are laying more and more due to the new and improved nesting boxes built by Farmer Jay. The eggs are small now so we are feeding them to the pigs, who fight over them they like them sooo much! This week we are starting swim lessons for Ian in the afternoons. He is very excited and looking forward to getting in the pool to show off his skills he already knows. I'm looking forward to getting into a routine of going to the YMCA everyday and maybe I'll stick around and workout. Energy I need you! I did go and do some field research on embroidery machines and boy are they expensive. Starting at $1,000 and going up. I went through a little sticker shock and decided I'm going to stick with the low end beginner models, which are half the price. I was almost sold on a machine with all the bells and whistles, but had to be shaken out of a trance when I got home. I always get sucked in when I go to the store by the salesperson. "You need this machine, you deserve it!" she says to me. "Help! Get me out of here!" I say. Back to reality Nancy, you don't need the $3,000 machine that sews on it's own, has 2,000 stitches, and plays the latest tunes from your IPod. Now if it took care of the kids, fixed dinner, folded laundry and cleaned my floors, then I'd reconsider! I'll probably buy something this week if I can decide and I'll keep you posted. I know you are at the edge of your seat right now waiting for more on the embroidery machine delima.

I must say I feel loved! I was showered with lots of birthday wishes and love from my family. We enjoyed the beach/dinner/movies on Friday and Sunday, my mom and dad had a cookout/ice cream/pool party at their house for my birthday. I was surprised with a really, really great gift; a gift card to buy my own embroidery machine. I almost cried when I opened it. Now I have to do my research and pick the right machine, what a challenge, but I'm up for it! Thanks family and friends for all the birthday wishes and for the embroidery machine, yes I'll make something for you all, don't worry! Today I signed up for an Etsy account, so now I'm selling my bags there as well. This bag is one of the two I have listed. Check it out and tell your friends. Yesterday, went swimmingly. All items on to do list completed and the party was a success. I did finish my birthday present to myself, the afore mentioned bag that was giving me sooo much trouble. It's done, finished, completed and ready to wear! So cute and summery, oh and it does match my apron from April's TOO. Now that our 50 chickens are laying eggs, they need some place to lay them. So, we now have temporary nesting boxes. When I say boxes I mean that literally, Priority Mail boxes. Just add a little hay and your set. Real nesting boxes coming soon, we promise. Hopefully they won't go on strike!! Anyone tired of hearing about our garden? Well too bad. Here's Ian bringing in the vegetables we picked this morning, peas, zucchini, yellow squash, and green tomatoes. I didn't want to risk leaving those beautiful tomotoes out there for the bugs to eat. Fried green tomatoes anyone? Finally, 31 years ago I was born right here in my hometown of Orange Park to Frank and Robin Mosher. I'm still here raising my children now and I'll soon be having my third in the same hospital I was born in. That's right, my little birthday surprise to all, we are expecting a new baby in January 2007. That's it for now, I'm off to enjoy my day!

I'm having a cupcake and coffee this morning in honor of my birthday tomorrow. Yesterday I just felt like making cake and I thought to myself, "Self, just make cupcakes! Your birthday is Friday, why not?" So at 4pm I whipped up some batter (boxed mix I'm not a super baker and I like my cake sweet) and popped them in the oven for a yummy afternoon treat. So this morning, Jay jetted off to Boca and I'm eating cupcakes for breakfast while I catch up on my blog reading and posting. I have a big day ahead of me. I'm hosting a double baby shower for two friends, so I have to clean the the house, especially the floors. These boys around here make a horrible mess while eating, a 5 foot perimeter around their chair is usually covered in food. Not sure how they do it. Oh, back to cupcakes, Ian ate a cupcake outside yesterday and somehow he got chocolate frosting on his back, like all over his back. How is that possible? I don't get it! On to the the list for today, floors, bathrooms, windows (make sure to get little handprints and doggy slobber), make baby gifts for shower tonight (one girl, one boy), finish bag for my birthday gift to myself. About the bag for myself, it has been a nightmare. I started it Tuesday night, spent 3 hours on it and when I thought it was finished it didn't work and it was ugly. So back to the drawing board, next day I took it apart, salvaged the bottom and lining and made a new top. Once it was done, I added a cute rick-rack trim and proceeded to ruin it again! I stitched the lining when I added the trim. So I ripped it out and now I have an almost completed bag. Must re-sew trim on and be more careful this time! I'm off to start my list and tomorrow it's off to the beach for the day. **Oh, I forgot to include in my list, feed and water pigs and chickens. Done, now I can check that off the list. While I was out there one of the 50 new hens (about 4 months old) laid her first baby egg. Yes, that means very soon we will have 4 dozen eggs a day. Hope you all like eggs, because that is what you are getting for Christmas, birthdays and other holidays from now on.

tomato bugs, garden helpers and bubbles

Our garden has a new look. The time has come for the lettuce, spinach and corn to go. Out with the old in with the new. Not sure what's going in next, but for now the watermelon and cantalope have more room to grow. I've been finding this bug in the tomatoes lately. Anyone know it's name? Does seven dust kill it? We are having Kung Pao Chicken with fresh boiled corn on the cob for dinner, because the boys helped shuck all the corn and we got about 10-12 ears. In total the spring crop yielded 20-25 ears, not bad for our first try! Yes, Ian is dressed appropriately in his Native American Costume for his first corn harvest. fun weekend

My posts have been few and far between lately, so I've decided to just post alot at once. We had a great weekend and started it on Saturday with a 2-year old birthday party. Not your typical 2-year old party, it was actually fun for the adults too! Our friends Gary and Julie live on a creek called Black Creek and they just built a boat dock where we ate our lunch and then we played in the water on the little sandy beach they have at the creek. The boys had a blast in the water, of course, and enjoyed home-made ice cream and cake. Good job Julie, yummy cake! Sunday was a great day we finally got some rain after 2 months of drought. It not only rained but I did see some hail, it was quite a storm. We were thankful for it though! Yesterday we spent the morning cleaning up around the house and taking care of the animals. While I was cleaning up the kitchen, Sean got into these and here is the outcome! He managed to only get the marker on himself and not on the walls or floor. Thank goodness for washable markers! We had lunch with Jay's sister and family, who were traveling back home to Tallahassee. Then, we were off to Spring Park for a Memorial Day Party with entertainment by The Clay County Community Band, which Jay's Dad is a part of. Sean enjoyed the band sitting on Grammie's lap and here is the picture of him when we were telling him, "put your tongue back in your mouth" and he just stuck it out further. It was a beautiful day with a great breeze by the water! Here is Ian's Garden, we are part of a homeschool group and this summer we are participating in an 8-week co-op, half science and half art. In the science half we are learning about creation, then for the art half we will be learning about artists and their style of art. I'm sure I'll post Ian's art, so excited to see what he creates, he loves to paint and he's very creative. It's soo much fun! The garden was planted on Tuesday and as of Saturday, this is what it looks like. Amazing how fast the seedlings grow. It's really a mix of everything, rye grass, beans, radishes and basil. Finally, on a crafty note, I've been busy making a sling, a diaper bag, both orders, I must admit that because it doesn't happen often, but I know it will take time to get this business going and a better website and I actually have to make some samples. So, I've ordered more fabric very cute stuff and I'm going to whip up a bunch of bags and sell them! Positive attitude, that's what it's going to take I'm sure!

While I was picking up some batting at the local superstore, I came across this cute fabric for a circle skirt on a panel of fabric, already printed with the waistband and directions. Pretty easy, except for the few times I had to rip out the waistband because I couldn't understand the small diagram and simple directions. Then, I headed over to my Mom's to use her special hemming foot, thanks Mom. She only had to rip out a few sections of the hem as well! I wore the skirt this past Sunday to church and did get a few positive comments and it was comfy. This is a picture of the panel I bought before I cut it out and made the skirt. Pictures of the skirt finished to come!

We have vegetables and lots of watermelon, like 15 or so. Any recipes out there for watermelon, what do you do with 20 watermelon at once? I guess we could do that cool sledgehammer game again! We ate these with grilled chicken on Saturday night and what a difference it makes to grow it yourself. I cooked the green beans, southern style boiled in water with a ham hock and lots of salt. I made a yummy squash casserole with the yellow squash, like my sister-in-law, Angela makes for holidays. Found the recipe online, I love GOOGLE! The green beans tasted so different, just yummy and the boys kept asking for more. I'm hoping that they will eat more vegetables because of the garden. Ian was just tickled that we picked the squash and we were going to eat it.

I have gotten back in the sewing room since my vacation. I tried sewing a smock to wear out for this month's tie one on, but it looks more like a tent, no picture neccessary. Then I worked on a baby gift set order in pink toile', very cute! Set includes a burp cloth, bib and changing pad that rolls up and is secured with a fabric covered elastic band.

Well, I've been pretty quiet lately, just haven't felt like posting. Not that there isn't anything to post about, lots going on around here. In March we ordered baby ducks for Jay's Dad's birthday and they finally arrived. The boys and I picked them up at the Post Office last week. They are all very cute and Grampie has taken to them quickly.

We are back from our whirlwind tour of the South-Eastern United States. The boys endured the long road trip with minimal screaming and fighting in the backseat. Jay and I endured the long road trip with minimal screaming and fighting in the front seat. Seriously, the trip was beautiful and we had a great time. The Wigington Farm in SC was so much fun and just breathtaking. The farm is home to 250 beef cattle, a few horses, some dogs and the Wigington Family, which has owned the farm land for over 100 years. Thanks for taking care of us and making us part of your family. After two nights at the farm, we all drove up to Virginia for the two-day Family Conference. It was very inspiring and well-attended. Doug Phillips was especially motivating with his talk on the role of the father today. Very convicting! We spent the morning grooming our garden, adding more mulch, staking the tomatoes, peas and cucumbers. After only a week, we have fruit growing, there are baby watermelons, yellow squash, and corn too! It's so exciting to watch it all grow and the boys are loving it!

coming and going

It is different around Emerald Lane after almost two weeks away, the grass is a little longer, our dog is a little stinkier, the house has a new house smell that we stopped noticing, the pigs and chickens are bigger and the garden is growing like crazy! I couldn't believe the corn, it has tripled in size and the watermelon is taking over the garden already. Everything is really going strong, thanks to our temporary gardener (Jay's Mom), she kindly took care of our beloved garden, watered and weeded when she wasn't feeding the pigs and chickens and taking care of her own garden. Thanks Mom Henry!

Oh, but there is more! We are only in town for a quick re-pack and one day of rest before we are off again to South Carolina and Virginia for some country fun. First stop, Easley, SC to visit a family farm with some friends. Second stop, Abingdon,VA for a family conference. So, thanks again Mom Henry for your hard work and dedication, only 5 days to go!

the beach

We made it back from the beach in one piece. Jay had to go for work and we tagged along for almost two weeks of South Florida sun and fun! We used to live in Delray Beach, so visiting was extra cool because we were able to catch up with some old friends, thanks Karen for hosting the gathering at your house! The house we stayed in was the highlight of the trip. It was a little casita right on the beach, with a great view, two bedrooms, a kitchen/living room and a common heated pool/jacuzzi. The boys and I spent our days either at the beach, the pool or strolling down A1A while poor Daddy had to work, even through the first weekend. Ian learned how to swim on his own while we were there and Sean went from now wanting me to let him go in the pool to jumping in from the side, with swimmies of course. Our stay was extended two nights, so Jay could work another day, which then allowed him to spend a little time with us during the day on the last weekend. Then I didn't have to feel guilty for enjoying myself sooo much!

As promised a little note about "Lambkin". The pattern was acquired here. I came across it last Saturday and had to make it right away, even though I had plans to make 4 wee bunnies for Easter the next day! It was very easy to make and so, so cute!

I will be computer free for the next few weeks, just a little family vacation to the beach!!! My goal is to leave the computer and sewing machine home to rest and not use Jay's while we are away. Self control I need you!

Here is my apron for tie one on this month, more pictures here. I used a pattern from my Great-Grandmother that my Mom loaned me. It has three front pockets and it has a back closure at the neck. The pattern called for a button, but that seemed to hard to close by oneself, so I opted for velcro. Did they have velcro in the 50's? Love the lemon fabric, very summery, since summer is just around the corner here in North Florida! It was in the 90's today. Well, we had a nice Easter Sunday and the boys enjoyed all the festivities so much they passed out at 6:30pm after terrorizing my parent's plants. Sorry Mom! Here is a look at their baskets and a cute lambkin that I will post about tomorrow.

Glimpse of the Garden

I've decided to start my own Thursday post series called "Glimpse of the Garden". I'll post a picture or a series of pictures of our garden and describe the work we put into it that week and the progress it's made. If anyone else has a garden, whether it be in a container or a yard plot, vegetables or flowers, please share. We could start a flickr group if there is some interst! This week the bush beans have been the main growers, they have caught up with the squash. The peppers and tomatoes, we planted from seed, have finally sprouted! Everything else is maintaining and so far no pests and few weeds. I have raked the pathway a few times and hand picked some weeds from around the plants. I spread straw around the plants and on the pathways to control the weeds and help with moisture retention. I'm sure as the summer comes along, we will be spending more time in the garden, but for now I'm enjoying the progress and sitting out by the garden looking at the green plants that are starting and imagining how good the vegetables will taste!

So, as you can tell, I can't stop posting. Must show off my latest creations!! I made a bag for my sister Monica, as a special request. It's a cute tote which has a canvas bottom/handles and Central Park Toile' in pink with a coordinating pink lining. Then I made a messenger style bag from this pattern, for myself as a test run before I make one for Marce's brother-in-law. He requested a man-diaper bag, so I thought this, would be a cool one, without the flower of course. (Marce, let me know if he likes this one and what size he needs. Check out the fabric from this post and let me know if he likes the stripe for the lining and which solid he likes better. Thanks!)

This morning I headed over to one of the many large "marts" near by, since there are no cool fabric stores locally or none that I know about that are within 10 miles of my home. Hate to drive far and torture the boys with long trips for fabric. Anyway, I found what I needed and more, the ladies at the cutting counter bickered about their hours and showed their dislike for eachother through whispers to me, "I'm going to kill her" one said to me as she cut through the fabric I was buying with really big scissors in hand. I did score some cute fabric from the $2 clearance rack. I always browse it in search of something when I have to go. (I really need to find an online source for all my crafting needs, so I don't have to experience the drama when I go the the super stores.) We spent the rest of the day hanging out with my parents, a friend that is missionary from France, who is on ferlow, and her children. We met at the park for a cookout and then went to Leslee's Farm to see all the animals and experience a little farm life. Norma Jean is getting big and still being bottle fed. Once we got home the garden needed a little TLC so the boys helped water and weed. All the seeds we have planted have broken ground so far. We are excited about the progress and can't wait to see how things go and if we get any eadible vegetables out of this first garden. The pigs are really enjoying their new home, rooting around and making themselves comfortable. I leave you with a picture of Scatter saying hello!

There's more new life and activity around here on Emerald Lane! Today we picked up two Yorkshire Pigs from a local family farm. It all started on Tuesday when I passed by a sign that read "Pigs 4 Sale" and I called to inquire, then I shared my discovery with my "gentleman farmer" and he said, "let's go for it". So here we are 3 days later, the proud owners of two pigs, Scatter and Petunia. Ian named them right away. Petunia, for the first pig he ever met in person at Aunt Leslee's Farm and Scatter, "because they use their noses to scatter the dirt around" he said. We plan to raise the male for meat and we aren't sure what we will do with the female, we'll just see how we like having pigs around and if we can stand the smell! Let me just say, the transportion of a pig in an SUV is not ideal!

This is the latest post from my bestest bud Kel over at revelations. Now you see it... Driving to central FL this weekend on Hwy 27, I passed a place called "Vanishing Species", which looked like a cheap knockoff of Lion Country Safari. I was thinking, what types of "vanishing species" could someone be keeping in this ramshackle farm in the middle of nowhere? Then I just assumed it was a small group of caged teenagers who act polite, drive defensively, and wear clothing that fits. That's the only vanishing species I can think of around here... She has a point!

inspiration is everywhere

I am inspired everywhere I go, whether it be the crafty blogs I visit daily, the grocery store, or the zoo, yes I said the zoo! I took the boys to the zoo last Friday with my parents, sister, her girls and our niece. It was packed with Mommies and Daddies, their children and of course animals. Well, the Mommies all had GREAT BAGS! My heart was all a flutter, while my eyes scanned the bags walking by. I was sketching in my mind all the details, top-stitching here, cool fabric there, wooden ring accent on that one. I did look at the animals and kept an eye on the boys while I was mentally gathering inspiration, it's just so hard not to do that. I have a sickness and it envolves looking at everything that is sewn and saying, "I can make that"! Thanks Mom, I remember her saying that many times while growing up. My main source of inspiration these days comes from the crafty blogs I visit, soelmama, wisecraft, littlebirds, simplesparrow, angrychicken, weewonderfuls, these are a few of my favorites. I have tried making softies, made a few aprons, with more to come, and my newest creation is a fabric flower pin with a covered button, so cool, due to a tutorial from wise craft. The flower pin goes with a new bag I've created, I call it City Bag! Thanks for the inspiration!

Yep that's me! I've been busy sewing bags for two days and here is the proof. The other bag to come!
Oh, before I forget, the garden is now 85% planted. I staked out the rest of the garden and planted squash, broccoli (that's for Jay, I don't eat the stuff), peas, carrots, two types of lettuce, and tomatoes. Still need to plant eggplant, cucumbers and beans.
It's coming along and the corn is really thriving!

A little of this and that

Spring in Florida is one of my favorite times, clear/blue skies, cool/warm weather, everything is blooming and the grass is green. The chance of a hurricane or other bad weather is non-existent. Life is good! This weekend was just an awesome example of Spring and we spent the entire day outside working and playing. I did spend a little time inside in the morning with my sewing machine, while the boys helped dad outside. I worked on a cute little bunny, the pattern came from wee wonderfuls, pictures to come. Jay's dad bought a tiller for his tractor so they could have a giant garden by the barn, so we brought it over to our tiny garden and tilled the side we haven't planted yet, which only took 5 minutes compared to the full days work the other tiller took. Wow, when you have the right equipment the job gets done much faster! The boys played on the huge dirt pile off and on during the day, but towards the late afternoon they spent a good hour on it and ended up having a dirt fight which resulted in the following. After they were covered in dirt what is a mother to do, but throw them in an outdoor bubble bath for a deep cleaning! Too bad they won't remember these days, but I'm sure I'll show them the pictures some day! Now that the shower has come and gone, I can show off my latest diaper bag set. I made it for my sister-in-law who is having her third boy next month. It is out of the Central Park Toile' with a plaid bottom and a coordinating print inside. There is also a coordinating bib with a button closure and a changing pad/burp cloth to match! More pictures here! In other crafty news, I made some cute bibs and blankets for a swap with Marce, you can check them out here! I made this quilt a few months ago, but never got around to sharing it. I guess I can't really call it a quilt because it does not have batting or quilting, so I will call it a patchwork blanket!

A New Home

Our baby chicks are growing up and have been moved from the barn into a brand new 2006 mobile home built by my chicken farmer wanta-be husband. The newest chicken tractor is 85% complete and now houses 50 Buff Orpington hens and 1 extotic rooster, type to be determined. We need to buy more metal roofing for the top and build nesting boxes, so for the time being, a green tarp and old interior door serves as a roof. I think the door is kind of cool, we could hing it and add a door bell while we're at it! Our garden is doing well, the corn is thriving and we now have watermelon and cantaloupe leaves breaking ground as well. Ian designed and created signs for two of the rows, all his idea. I let him go and didn't try to take over, like I usually do. He went through all his popsicle sticks and a good amount of glue and paint for his two signs, but I like them.

Girl's Weekend

My New York trip was a success, lots of fun and laughter with some really good friends. We don't talk often anymore or even email much, but as soon as we get together we talk and laugh like we have never been apart. We met on Thursday morning at La Guardia airport and then headed to our hotel next to Grand Central Station. We ate lunch at a really good Chinese Restaurant near our hotel and went ice skating at Rockafeller Center. On Friday we were determined to be on tv, so we got up at 5 am and walked to the NBC studios, got there at 6 am and waited in line until 7 am when the show started. We planned on staying for as long as it took to be on tv, well that proved to be another 3 hours, because AL never talked to us and the camera man stayed on the opposite side of us. At 9:45am, Katie and I had to leave and sit down, but Kelli was a trooper and stuck it our for 15 more minutes, that was it, just 15 more minutes after waiting for 3 hours and 45 minutes!! While Katie and I were waiting, my sister calls me and tells me she just saw Kelli on tv! Typical, I wait forever and give up. I could have had my moment of fame, oh well, a morning wasted in New York, but not quite. While we were waiting, Katie Couric was walking around posing for pictures with everyone, so we got our picture with her. I guess she's not so bad after all! We spent the next few hours resting up for dinner in Little Italy. We planned to eat at Luna's, a restaurant we ate at 8 years ago, when we all visited New York together. Well, Luna's was closed for rennovation, go figure. Good thing there are about 500 Italian Restaurants to choose from with all the waiters standing on the sidewalk with menus asking you to come eat at their restaurant. It wasn't hard at all to choose one! On Saturday we went on a lunch cruise on the Hudson, which included a buffet lunch, desert, caberet show and dance music and views of the city and statue of liberty. We did some shopping and rested some more and then back out for dinner. Then there is Sunday, wow that was fast and we had to part. Such sweet sorrow! I did miss my boys and husband. Tried not to talk or think about them every waking moment, but they were on my mind often and I did show a lady in china town the picture of my boys when I was buying them swords and maybe a few other people, like the lady next to me on the plane home! Thanks girls for putting up with me for 4 days and thanks family for putting up without me for four days and missing me!!

My brother-in-law and his family are missionaries in Thailand, check out their blog here. They just had their second son over there, Calvin Lewis and my mother-in-law traveled there for a month to help out with their 2-1/2 year old. Well, she came home last week with the following goodies, beautiful orchids, a money purse, a silk elephant tie for Jay, 2 elephant toys for the boys, and some beautiful Thai fabric I can't wait to cut into or I might make a sling for myself. Thanks Crystal and Paul and Grammie for the gifts from Thailand!

New York City here I come!

I'm getting excited about my trip to New York City this weekend! Going with my two best college buddies, Kelli and Katie. We are all flying out of different cities (Jax, Atlanta and West Palm) and meeting in New York on Thursday morning and leaving Sunday afternoon. The weather looks chilly there for the weekend with a high of 62 degrees. Guess I will have to layer up, thanks Mom for teaching me about layering, have to give credit where it's due. We plan on shopping, touring and checking out the museums of course and eating really well. Oh, and maybe we will even brave the cold early morning crowd outside of the Today Show, with crazy hats and signs, so keep and eye out for us on Friday morning! The husband is in charge of the boys for the weekend and he is even taking two days off work, which is his looking forward to, so he can work and play in the yard with the boys. Maybe he will have another chicken tractor done by the time I get back! Whoo, hoo! So if I don't post for a while, it's probably because I am busy getting ready, making my packing list, washing clothes and packing my bags for the "BIG APPLE"!!

Garden and stuff

We are getting ready for spring these days with flowers and a garden. Last month we planned out our spring garden, a 25' x 25' area to include corn, watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. Jay prepared the area with a rotatiller, thanks to "our neighbors" and Ian helped spread fertilizer and peet moss around, then we planted corn a few weeks ago. Now we have little corn sprouts that the boys love to check out everyday. We are looking forward to learning how to garden and grow vegetables with the boys. I am going to try to post when there is progress and keep this blog updated with our gardening adventure, whether it's good or bad. Yesterday, Ian and I read this book about trees and in the back, it had a little project for making bird treats to hang in a tree. It is really cute and easy for a yound child to make. Here are the directions: you need cookie cutters, bread, egg whites, bird seed and string. Cut out a shape in the bread, then poke a hole with a chop stick through the bread at the top of the shape, then brush egg white over the bread and press bird seed into it. Let it dry, then tie the string through the hole and hang it in a tree for the birds and squirrels to enjoy! We made a dog bone, a bunny and a foot!

Here is my second apron for tieoneon. The theme this month is a Mapron, that's an apron for a man! Since my man is into compost, I decided he needed an apron for turning his piles. The mapron is out of that heavy vinyl stuff and the straps are out of webbing. There are three pockets with a cool camo accent at the top to make it manly (as I write this, Jay doesn't think that sounds very manly). He has actually used it twice and I don't have to worry about him ruining his clothes, added bonus!

Ian started the day out with a little water gun shooting and rooster chasing. Yes, I said rooster chasing! The poor rooster was on our back porch and Ian decided he did not need to be there, so he had me fill up his gun and off he went out the door shooting away, hopefully P.E.T.A. doesn't see this post! Later on, Ian put on his new cape with his water gun in hand and turned into "SUPER IAN" flying around the driveway, climbing trees and collecting those round porcupine brown things that come from trees as amunition for his sling shot. Overall, today was an eventful day for Ian who is now peacefully asleep until tomorrow when he returns to his duties as "SUPER IAN", the rooster shooting, tree climbing, flying 3-year old!!!

Well, here in North Florida we are having a few cold days. Today was no exception. We made our way over to the library for story time and a little Valentine's Day inspired craft. After that Sean had his 18 month check-up without the shots, because they did not have his shot records, that somehow did not make it over from the last doctor's office. I know I had them transferred, but that's just how it goes, another trip to the doctor it will be. After of course I call the other doctor again to transfer the paperwork, but first I must sign a release form, mail it back and then they will send it right out. Then I can check, Sean's 18 month check-up off my list. Whew! Since it was so cold out today we stayed inside and had a little fun with drums! As you all know I have been doing a little crafting lately. I have the following to make for my little business; 3 slings (one is complete) and 2 lambies, but I found this really cute pattern online while lurking on this particular,blog. It is for a cute kitty and it was free so I had to try it. All other crafting stopped until I could finish this kitty. I started one out of some scrap fabric, but it did not make it to completion, she was just too sad to finish. So I started over and finished this one in spurts of craftiness until she was done!

Okay, I have to admit I am addicted to my computer! My computer is on all day and I check my email at every free moment during the day and then at night I read my favorite blogs and try not to get totally absorbed into them by clicking the links to other blogs or websites, yikes! When I check my email it's like checking my answering machine, I have to keep in touch you know, so that's my excuse for that one. The blogs, yes it's out of control, I do spend way too much time looking at those. I do get crafty inspiration, that I then turn into crafty creations. So, I am going to stop writing and go upstairs and craft now. Turn off the computer Nancy!

This soft, plush lamb was inspired by Sean's "Lambie". I made it out of this great vintage fabric from my Grandmother that has been sitting in my stash of fabric. He has hand-embroidered eyes and nose and a violet, satin ribbon. I am giving this one to Ian, because he is always talking about having a Lambie of his own! Chicken Tractor

Another bit of news, Jay built a chicken tractor, which is a portable chicken pen. It allows the chickens to supplement their feed with bugs and grass and protects them from pretators. Anyway, this is one of two Jay will build to house all the new baby chicks as well as the 9 existing chickens. Well, that was our Monday!

Well, some of you know that Jay ordered 50 baby chicks around Christmas time and now you all know. They arrived this morning at the Post Office, Priority Mail. We picked them up and brought them to their new home. We got a free exotic bird, we don't know what type, but it's the only brown one of course. It's our little ugly duckling! The boys had a fun time getting their new home ready and then watching them scurry around for food and water all the while peeping like crazy. They are very cute and fuzzy too! Ian even got used to picking them up and holding them, but not always gently. They are all hens and we plan on using them for the eggs, so if you like fresh eggs we will have plenty in about 6-10months, we'll let you know.

I must brag a little! My friend Marceline has discovered a gift for knitting, she is ever so talented. Here is a picture of her latest project! Marceline shares, "The yarn is a yummy cotton blend called bubbles (the orange stripe wasn't part of the original, but when have I ever followed the status quo??)" Outdoor Fun

Lately, we have been busy working outside. Here's the run down: A few weeks ago, Jay put up a tire swing by the pond, which Ian loves! (better picture to come) Just last weekend Jay found a new love, compost. He read this book, Let it Rot and decided to build a 4 bin compost and loaded it with hay from the chicken coop, which was very fertile!! It is heating up quickly and Jay is so excited! So weird, he asked me today with this big grin "did you see the steam coming off the compost this morning?" It was like he was telling me about some great news, like "I bought you a brand new sewing machine with an embroidery attachment and serger!!" Well, maybe not that great! But you get my point! I've been planting flowers and transplanting plants from the neighbors (you know the other Henry's). Pictures of my work to come. So I've neglected my sewing these days to work outside in the sun and the boys love to work right along side me. Ian with the hoe today and Sean with the shovel and me with this panicked look and even more panicked scream telling Ian, "stop holding the hoe above your head you might hit your brother!" Yikes! We all still have our heads and all our limbs. Not sure how? Here is a picture of Ian and Jay taking an evening paddle around the pond!

Field Trip

The boys and I took a field trip today out to Uncle Pat and Aunt Leslee's farm, they have a new calf, named Norma Jean that we just had to meet. Sean and I got to feed Norma Jean her gigantic bottle, which she gets 5-6 times per day, while Ian slept in the stroller and Ramber, the pony, and Donquijote, the donkey looked on at us. Norma Jean loved her milk, and sucked it up as fast as she could. Every once in a while she would head butt the bottle to get the milk out faster and the bottle hit me once and hit Sean in the head. Not to worry we are both okay! After Norma Jean had her bottle we took her out to the field for her exercise and she frolicked with little Spot the dog, very cute! In the mean time, I was finally able to wake Ian and he enjoyed watching Norma Jean run around with Spot. The boys had a great time! Thanks Aunt Leslee for letting us meet Norma Jean!

This month's theme: apron from clothes, love the idea. Feels good to cut up old clothes and reuse them, I feel thrifty! I used a pair of cut-off shorts for the apron front and a dress for the tie. I used the existing belt loops to hold the tie in place. The back of the shorts are actually the front and the front is gone except for a the belt loops and pockets.

Ivy Grace Dowd was born weighing in at 9lbs. 6oz. and 20.5" long!! Her proud parents, Jeff and Monica Dowd, Monica is my sister, welcomed her at 1:58pm on the 6th! Oh, by the way the 6th is also my Mom's birthday, Happy Birthday Mom!!! What a present!!

We started the year off with a trip to St. Augustine, to see the beach and the lights around downtown. The beach was pretty busy and the boys had fun getting all wet! Even though I tried really hard to prevent it, they managed to soak their pants. Didn't bring an extra set of clothes, but we did find an open laundromat on New Year's Day! Then, we were off the see the lights all over downtown St. Augustine, very cool! We are also starting the year off with ear infections! Both boys have infections and we are praying for a full recovery sooner than later. We all need some sleep!!! Happy New Year to everyone!

Christmas & More

Christmas has come and gone once more, leaving us all with lots of chocolate, cookies, toys and snoty noses? Yes, the noses are still running! We might have a record this year. Even with the coughing and constant runny noses, we all had a great Christmas! We started celebrating on Christmas Eve Eve, Friday night at my parent's house. Everyone was there with lots of food and games and of course presents. The kids had their own party tray with food, like chicken nuggets, popcorn balls, raisins and specially cutout grilled cheese sandwiches. I don't remember my parents making me fancy sandwiches. I guess the granchildren get all the good stuff! Sean especially liked the popcorn balls, everytime I saw him he had one in his hand, he probably ate 5 or 6! We draw names in three groups, the adults, the teenagers and then the smaller children. It works out, because there are so many of us. On Christmas Eve we had some of Jay's family over for snacks and we sang some carols. Ian had a great time playing the jingle bells and his drum along with us. Christmas Day we woke up and opened our stockings and presents and then exchanged gifts next door with Jay's family and had a yummy breakfast. Then, it was nap time for Sean and we had to get ready for church. After church it was nap time for everyone and then we had Christmas Dinner! That's it, then I was pooped and ready for bed.

Just bored and wanted to post because I haven't posted in a while. Well, lately my boys have been sick, well Ian has been sick since November. He has had a cough that turned into an ear infection, treated with antibotics and then he caught something else, fever and now some red rash, maybe rosiola? Now Sean is snotty and coughing and Jay and I think we are getting something too. So, we are just homebound for a while, yuck!!! Other than being sick we're ready for Christmas, all the presents are wrapped and the tree is up with lights and decorations. The cookies have been baked, eaten and then baked again, waiting to be eaten again! The Christmas cards have been mailed, but no letter this year, just couldn't get it together to write a nice letter. Though I did send everyone a link to the blog to catch up with us! As I was reviewing our year, I browsed our pictures on the computer and found some cute ones I thought I would share.......

While waiting in line: - Your 3 year old holds the rotating Christmas Tree in place. - He then picks up the angel decoration and it drops on the floor. - He sings Ho, Ho, Ho to himself while dancing. At the counter: - The clerk does not accept the pre-filled in customs form. - She turns you away to fill out an even longer one and reminds you to address your package. - One year old starts to whine, wants out of stroller. At the bench: - Graham crackers are distributed, peace for a moment. - Finish filling out longer form and addressing package. While waiting in line again: - Must pick up and hold one year old while 3 year old chooses not to listen some more. - One year old drops graham cracker on the floor. At the counter again: - New clerk says I have the wrong form, must fill out new one. - 3 year old walks back to bench away from the counter, I call him back and make him sit in the stroller. With my back turned, he stands in it and a nice man helps me get him to sit. - I tell clerk I'm going crazy and I can't find the first form I filled out, MIA. - She let's me fill it out there while holding fussy one year old. The moral of the story is, go to the post office on Saturday without the small children!

Second Thanksgiving

Last night we celebrated Thanksgiving all over again at my parents house. Jay and I have renamed it, Moshergiving (Mosher is my maiden name). Anyway, it's when my side of the family gets together, on a day other than Thanksgiving Day, and pigs out. The whole gang around the table! The effects of eating too much Turkey! We also threw my sister Monica a surprise baby shower and played a really funny game, called "Guess what's in the diaper?" Here's how it goes; there are 6 diapers filled with various "food" items, you pass the diapers around, sniff and/or taste to figure out what's in the diaper. Some of the items were, mashed up Mr. Goodbar, pesto, mustard, squash cassrole, and sweet potatoes. Some were pretty realistic looking and smelling, yuck! Everyone had a good laugh! Monica opening her presents! Mom sniffing a diaper! Jay, Ian, Erin, and Monica cracking up while playing the diaper game!

First Thanksgiving!

Yesterday marked the First Thanksgiving in our new house. We usually celebrate on Thanksgiving Day with Jay's family at his parents house. This year none of his siblings were coming "home", so we offered to have it at our house and cook the big bird. Jay's parents came over and we invited a couple from church and their daughter Ava. They are from Wisconsin stationed here with the Navy. It was such a beautiful day, blue skies, 75 degrees and a nice breeze. (Hey that rhymes!) I cooked in the kitchen while listening to Christmas music and Jay took care of the boys, while he set up a target for shooting a bow and arrow. The day was going well until it was time to eat, we had everything ready and Jay was carving the turkey, and then I heard "it's not done!" We checked the temperature, looked at the juices and after 5 hours of cooking and 15 bastings, the bird was not done. Oh well, we popped it back in the oven and started eating everything else, which was actually plenty. So the turkey cooked another 1/2 hour and it was one good bird, gotta thank Chuck Williams for his recipe, Herb-Roasted Turkey The table set and ready for our guests! Here's Jay, Sean, Ian, Tim and Ava in the wagon going on a hayride after dinner. Ava and Ian with their Indian (oops! Native American) headresses on!

My little Seanie, as we call him around here, loves to help me out! He doesn't know he's helping, but everytime he turns on my little battery powered sweeper, called a Shark, he picks up some dirt! Yippee! I'll let him discover later, that it's work. For now I'll just happen to leave it out so he can have some "fun"!

Family Square Dance

Fun was had by all Saturday on Emerald Lane! We had a traditional square dance at our house for a few people, oh I'd say about 100 of our closest friends and family! Well, we didn't know everyone, but we tried to meet them all and have a good time. We started with a mixer or and ice breaker game, where everyone walked around talking to each other asking questions and signing each others papers. There was all kinds of mixing going on, then the judging began for the chili and baking contests. Three judges for each contest tasted and thought and then tasted again, until they came to a consensus. We blessed the food and the eating began, we had salads and grilled chicken, hotdogs and a variety of casseroles, lots of food to go around. While all that was going on, there was a tractor with a wagon full of little children roaring around the property, which is also known as a hayride. The children waited, some patiently, some not for a ride in that wagon in the dark. After dinner, the contestants waited eagerly for the results of the contests and the winners were announced and received their prizes. Now to the main event, square dancing! The caller started around 7pm and rounded up everyone for some dancing fun. The adults danced while the children played running around freely without a care in the world. After a while the campfire was started and thoughts of smores took over the minds of the children. They waited and waited for the fire to be just right for roasting that fluffy marshmallow. Thankfully an adult felt lead to stand guard and direct the children in proper marshmallow roasting etiquette so the situation didn't get out of control. After the square dance the older children participated in the "Sledge-o-Matic" game, which consisted of 3 relay teams, 3 sledge hammers, 3 trees stumps, 3 bags full of soda cans, various fruits, jello cups and 3 pumpkins. At the sound of the whistle the first up runs to the stump, picks out and item out of the bag, places it on the stump and smashes it with the sledge hammer. Some took 2 or 3 tries or even 5, and some nailed the item on the first try. The soda cans were the best, when smashed they spewed like a fountain. That was the finale to the evening and then the clean up began. Everyone pitched in and got the work done! Thanks to all that came and made it a fun night!

Here are pictures of my latest creations! A coordinating diaper bag and changing pad. The top of the bag is out of the popular black and white "Central Park Toile', which has little children playing and the bottom is a matching black and white plaid with a b/w ribbon between the two fabrics. It has a magnetic closure and 5 interior pockets for diapers wipes and cups and lined with a b/w gingham fabric. The changing pad coordinates with the bag and rolls up and is held together with an elastic band which is attached at the top.

Ian and his cousin Lucy Pearl pose for the camera! We went to Grace Church for their annual Fall Festival on 10/31. Ian was a terrific Tigger and Lucy Pearl was cute just as herself. Sean's not in this picture, but he was Pooh Bear. They had a great time playing games and eating lots of food. Ian ate a hotdog, a hamburger, chips, popcorn, 2 cups of ice cream and he would have eaten the table if I didn't stop him. Not sure what got into him that night, maybe a growth spurt!

First Fire

We had our first fire in our new fireplace last night. Jay was so excited to light it and it only took an entire cardboard box to get it going! We sat on the floor in front of the fire and enjoyed the heat. Jay finished reading Winnie the Pooh to Ian and they shared a cup of hot chocolate, sounds nice doesn't it? It was, then we all fell asleep... Jay and I both woke up around 12am and Ian was asleep on the floor too.

I haven't posted in a while. So I'm just going to post a bunch at once. We've had great weather here, low 42 and high in the 6o's I think. Anyway, Fall is finally here and it feels awesome. We've been roasting marshmellows over around a fire the past two nights. The boys were really cute eating all the marshmellows and chocolate. We have these mini-lanterns they like to carry in the dark out to the fire, they are really cute doing that too! There isn't much they do that isn't cute, well, I guess the whinning isn't really that cute! Anyway, here are a few pictures of the boys dancing and wearing hats. When I'm getting ready in the morning, I turn on the music and they run around my room with these old hats dancing and laughing.

Well, I made something for myself. Finally!! It's a cute duffel bag-style purse out of a quilted suede-like material with a houndstooth patterned lining. It has a zipper closure and I even added a little pocket to the inside.

A Pirates Life for Me!

While sitting outside with my two boys, Ian 2-1/2 and Sean 14 months, I notice them on top of a plastic slide/house holding sticks high in the air. Ian is singing "Yo, ho, ho a pirate's life for me" while Sean hums along, waving his stick above his head, mimicking older brother's every move. There are sticks everywhere! We have lots of them, they are guns, swords, spears, weed wackerers (as Ian calls them), shovels, planes and so on. On a typical day, we have a large collection of sticks outside on the porch waiting for a little boy to pick them up and bring them back to life. Did I mention that Ian is a naked pirate? Yes, he is going bare bottom around the house and outside to help promote proper use of the plumbing fixture we call a potty! This technique seems to be working. Progress has been made with little effort and a few accidents. Oh, what a great day it will be when we no longer have to change an almost 3 year olds dirty, dirty diaper! t.t.f.n.
